73. Maintenance of Water Works.—A constant supply was maintained on 272 days during the year.
Owing to the protracted dry season and the short wet season it was necessary to impose the following restrictions: 7th to 10th May, 14 hours daily (6 A.M.—8 P.M.); 11th to 31st May, 7 hours daily (6—10 A.M. and 4—7 P.M.); 1st to 11th June, 4½ hours daily (7—8.30 A.M. and 4.30—6 P.M.); 12th to 14th June, 4 hours daily (6.30—8.30 A.M. and 4.30—6.30 P.M.); 7th November to 31st December, 10 hours daily (6—11 A.M. and 4—9 P.M.).
In June a new system of street fountains was completed which enabled a supply of eleven to twelve hours per day to be given in the more congested districts, despite the shorter
