12. Several special express Tourist Trains were run to and from Canton in connection with "Round the World" cruises and general satisfaction was expressed with the service rendered by the railway. On three other occasions, special through trains were run for high officials of the Chinese Government.
13. Local Passenger Traffic. This showed a decided improvement over the previous year of over 8% in the numbers carried, and over 10% in the revenue from that source. Local goods traffic, despite competition by road motor transport and a general reduction in the tariff, showed a pleasing improvement of over 60% in revenue, partly due to the reopening of the brickworks at Lowu.
14. The usual special trains were run for the Military Authorities during the camping season. Several special trains were run in connection with Race Meetings at the Kwanti Course, Fanling, for which combined rail and entrance tickets were issued, the returns showing a progressive increase in popularity throughout the year.
15. The revenue from golfing traffic showed an upward tendency when compared with the previous year. That from the Royal Hong Kong Golf Club increased by 7%, and from the Country Club by 21%.
16. On January the 5th and 6th, an Agricultural Show was held at Sheung Shui for which special cheap tickets were issued and reductions granted in rates for all exhibits in an endeavour to assist agriculture in the New Territories.
ENGINEERING.
17. The principal new works of the year were additional siding accommodation at Fanling Station including reinforced concrete loading platform and lock-up goodshed to cope with traffic during the trooping season. The new Painting Shop at the Workshops was only started in December after the arrival of the steelwork from England.
18. In connection with the pipe line for conveying water across the harbour, the Railway Department dug a trench for a 24-inch steel pipe main to pass under the tracks at Kowloon Station for the Public Works Department and concreted the pipe in when laid.
19. Under general maintenance the station buildings and offices at Kowloon, including the goodsheds, were repainted and colour-washed. Twelve heavy steel frames were inserted in the windows of the clock tower as additional support to the mullions.
