The total number of paid radio-telegrams for the year is therefore 156,755 messages which is 65% increase over the figures for 1928. The total number of paid words is 1,551,906 being an increase compared with last year of 82% (Exclusive of Anti-Piracy messages).

The total number of unpaid messages for the year is 29,539 which is 114% increase over the figures for 1928. The total number of unpaid words is 1,041,198 being an increase compared with last year of 68%. (Police messages not included in previous annual reports).

NEW SERVICES.

During the year new services were commenced with Pakhoi, Chungshan, Kochow, Swabue, Toyshan, Waichow, Kiukiang, Suncheong and Shanghai, and an emergency wireless service to Formosa via Taihoku Radio was in operation during the interruption of Cable service between Foochow and Sharp Peak between 24/4/29 and 15/7/29. Of the new services Shanghai is the most important, this being responsible for 21,486 messages 185,069 words of the traffic shown under the heading "Chinese Government Radio Administration". For the period 22/7/29 to 25/7/29, during the interruption of Cable services Wireless was the only means of communication between Hong Kong and Shanghai, thus demonstrating in no uncertain manner the value of the new service.

During the year distress messages were received from the following vessels:-
