Five locomotives were repainted. More painting to locomotives should have been done, but owing to heavy traffic requirements, it was found impossible to do so.
31. Both motor coaches ran very satisfactorily during the year, new solid steel wheels having been fitted to all axles. Both motor coaches were overhauled during the year.
32. Eighteen carriages passed through the works for painting, nine of these were given a general overhaul as well.
Three carriages were found to be badly damaged in the woodwork by dry rot. It was necessary to renew all the interior woodwork and outside lower panelling and to cut out and strengthen all the wooden side supports.
33. Carriage No. 35 which was fitted with a kitchen and pantry was reconstructed and two additional coupes were substituted in place of the kitchen and pantry, making the car more suitable for through traffic to Canton.
34. Fifty-five wagons went through the shops, and were given a general overhaul and repainted. Thirty Chinese Section wagons in addition, were rebuilt and painted; this latter work being done on payment from the Chinese Section.
35. The Motor Department was kept extremely busy during the year; one hundred and forty work orders being carried out for Government servants and other departments.
36. Only one new machine was installed, this being a portable Electric Welding Plant, which is a great improvement over the old machine, enabling welding work to be carried out in any part of the workshops.
37. A new chain drive was fitted to the wheel lathe to allow of a reduction of speed, found necessary in machining very hard tyres.
38. All the machines in the Workshops were maintained, and some received minor repairs.
ACCIDENTS.
39. There were fewer accidents than in 1927. The list includes:-
