Q 117
In 1926 the Survey Department was separated from the Crown Lands Department and became a separate branch of the Public Works Department. Since the 1st April 1926 the Survey Staff have, to a large extent, concentrated on the survey of the City of Victoria and revision work on the portion surveyed before that date. Owing to the rapid development of Kowloon and New Kowloon it became necessary to make a complete new map, as the original one was entirely out of date.
The actual area of the work done in Hong Kong, most of it very close detail and on steep hill side is 7791 acres. The whole of this has been plotted to a scale of 1:500 or 50 ft. to 1 inch.
In Kowloon and New Kowloon during the same period 1408 acres have been surveyed and 1301 plotted, also to a scale of 1:500.
In the New Territorys a large number of villages have been surveyed and the work plotted to scale.
The number of sheets taken up in Hong Kong-scale 1:500 is 163 of which 20 have been entirely completed, 20 remain to be taken up. Fifty-seven sheets have been reduced to a scale of 1:2400.
In Kowloon and New Kowloon 68 sheets have been taken up and 19 completed and in the New Territories 148 sheets but none have been completed.
The officer stationed in the New Territories is employed almost entirely on work required by the District Officer and a survey sheet is taken up when the work required fits in with the survey of the Colony. This accounts for none of the sheets being completed.
(5) Practically the whole of the Colony has been covered by triangulation, eight beacons on the Lantau Island only require to be connected with the main work.
The average length of sides being 4-6 miles.
The number of main stations per 100 square miles is approximately 10.
Average error of Triangular closure 4" (approx.).
(6) Levelling.
No work of this nature has been undertaken by this office to date. It is proposed however to commence, at an early date, the revision of the existing work and eventually carry out the levelling of the entire Colony. This work will be based on records obtained from the automatic Tide Gauges established at Kennedy Town and Shaukiwan.
