2. Cost of Office.-As the Survey Office forms part of the Public Works Department and is accommodated in the same building, the charges for numerous items such as lighting, heating, electric fans, etc., cannot be stated. Omitting these items the statement of costs is as follows:-

3. European Staff. Mr. E. B. Reed, Superintendent of Surveys, who had proceeded on leave in April, returned at the end of December. Mr. E. B. Lambert, 1st Class Surveyor, who was seconded to the Crown Lands Office at the end of 1926 remained in that position for the whole of the year under review. Mr. B. H. C. Hallowes, 1st Class Surveyor, returned from leave in November and Mr. C. H. Lamb, 2nd Class Surveyor, in February, 1929.
4. Chinese Surveyors.-The proposal to increase the staff by the addition of 2 First Grade and 2 Second Grade surveyors, mentioned in the report for last year has not yet been put into effect, there being a difficulty in obtaining suitable men. Three Apprentice Surveyors were promoted during the year to the 3rd Grade. No further student surveyors were taken on during the year.
5. Triangulation. During the Year under review i.e. 1.4.28-31.3.29 with the exception of certain observations necessary to tie the "Observatory" Station on to existing triangulation, no work of this nature was undertaken but beacons were erected at the following places, Tai O Hill 1577 East of Yee Wo Village One Tree Island, South Soko Island, East Brothers Islands, Chu Lu Kok, Lantau Peak, Hill 870 South of Nam Tin Village.
Nam Tin Village. The following triangulation stations were visited and a report made on the condition.
