WIRELESS TELEGRAPHY.
205. A summary of the work done under this heading is given below.
(i.) Cape D'Aguilar Wireless Telegraph Station (V.P.S.).—
(a.) Three short wave transmitters were built in the Electrical Workshops and installed during the year which have proved most satisfactory.
(b.) A new 6 K.W. Motor Alternator Set was installed in December.
(c.) The revenue from V.P.S. (D'Aguilar) has shown the satisfactory increase of 82% during the year.
(ii.) The Government School for training Asiatic Operators.—It was re-opened on the 4th January. Thirty-one students attended of whom fifteen passed and five failed at the examination; two obtained posts as Telegraphists before the completion of the course, and the remainder either left the school before the end of the course or did not sit for the examination.
(iii.) Interport Traffic.—Owing to the unsettled condition in South China, the amount of traffic handled varied within wide limits. The service to Swatow was resumed on the 5th April and that to Amoy opened on the 24th September.
(iv.) Rugby Press.—Approximately two hundred and six thousand words were received and distributed to various Government Offices and the local Press.
Atmospherics have interfered with reception from time to time. It is hoped to effect an improvement in 1928.
(v.) The Meteorological Wireless Telegraph Station at the Royal Observatory (G.O.W.).—One and one-half K.W. Telegraphy and Telephony was opened to traffic on the 1st April, its range being 500 miles for telegraphy and 100 miles for telephony.
(vi.) The Non-commercial Wireless Service.—The Police Stations and Launches, Rescue Tug, and Lighthouses were maintained in a satisfactory manner.
(v.) Radio Licences for Amateurs.—The number issued during the year was as follows:-
