Q 52
On the early morning of the 19th July a retaining wall on Inland Lot No. 2354, Stubbs Road collapsed, resulting in the road being blocked for a few days.
The heavy rainstorm on the 18-19th of July caused the greatest amount of damage during the period under review, streets in the City were covered with debris and sand mainly due to the bursting and overflowing of culverts; asphaltum surfacing in Pedder Street, Queen's Road East, Hill Road & Pokfulam Road was undermined and washed away; and landslips occurred on practically all the outlying roads.
After each rainstorm, the fleet of P.W.D. lorries proved of inestimable value in rapidly clearing the streets of debris.
Large landslips occurred on the following roads:--
Lower Albert Road, Conduit Road, Victoria Road, Glenealy Path, May Road, Tai Hang Motor Road, Morrison Gap Road, Village Road, Shek O Road, Caine Road, Magazine Gap Road, Tregunter Path, Stubbs Road, Mt. Cameron Road, New Road above Conduit Road, Kennedy Road, Broadwood Road, Taitam Path, Macdonnell Road, Cape D'Aguilar Path, Bowen Road, Shaukiwan Road, Aberdeen Old Road, Road from Wongneichong Gap to Repulse Bay, Pokfulam Road, Mt. Davis Road, Road from Wanchai Gap to Bowen Road, Island Road, Sai Wan Gap Road, Tin Hau Temple Road, Mt. Parker Path, Mt. Kellett Road, Tai Hang Village.
Retaining walls to support the banks where landslips occurred were found to be necessary on the following roads:—
Stubbs Road, New Road above Conduit Road, Magazine Gap Road, Wongneichong Gap Road, Road from Wongneichong Gap to Repulse Bay, Pokfulam Road, Victoria Street, Road between Stanley Gap and Repulse Bay, Centre Street, New Road from Robinson Road to Conduit Road, Conduit Road, Ice House Street.
In re-building this culvert it was widened and raised in level. Access Road to War Memorial Nursing Home.-A good length of the road surface was completely scoured. The choking of a culvert caused the washout of an embankment. This damage was repaired by the end of the year.
Drainage.-Considerable damage on the night of 18th-19th July was done to nullahs, stormwater drains and sewers, the Calder Path Nullah from near the lower Peak Tram Station to Victoria Hospital being entirely destroyed. Repairs to the following nullahs, culverts, stormwater drains and sewers which were badly damaged, were completed during the year:-
