Harbour Developments.

During the year a deposit of silt which had settled on the rubble foundation in advance of the block setting was removed by suction dredger. The building of the masonry walls above the plinth course was begun in January, shortly afterwards the construction of the West wall was sufficiently advanced and backed with building debris to allow the lessees of N.K.M.L. No. 8 to deposit approved material behind it, as previously arranged. All the blockwork to the West wall was completed in June and by the middle of July 300 feet of berthage was ready for the accommodation of waterboats, 500 feet being available by the end of September, inclusive of 6 water chambers, 6 wrought iron ladders and 7 cast iron bollards. At the close of the year, progress on the East wall was well advanced, the blockwork having been completed by November, the plinth course laid, except for 117 feet, and approximately 220 feet of masonry wall built up to the level of 8.00 above P.D. The nullah walls were completed as far as practicable, including lengths of 235 and 196 feet of parapet walling, and foundations for the reinforced concrete bridge prepared.

The original date for the completion of the Contract was 9th March, 1925, but owing to delay caused to the contractor by a strike of junkmen in 1924, and further delay to the dredging which was carried out by the Government, an extension of time was granted making the date for completion the 15th April, 1926.

No appreciable interruption was caused by the labour trouble commencing in June, due in a great measure to the location of the works.

Certificates passed during the year amounted to $357,216.62.

Total Estimates... $440,000.00 1925 Actual Expenditure 1925 $200,000.00 Expenditure to 31.12.25 $178,839.12 $357,216.62
