60. Translation Work done in the Secretariat for Chinese Affairs during the year 1925.

The total number of translations done by the Translator was thus 612 as against 1,002 in 1924, 792 in 1923, and 758 in 1922.

In addition a large number of translations made in other Government Departments are sent to this office for revision. Much translation work is done by members of the staff other than the Translator, but of this no record is kept.

61. The income from stalls was $3,270 (in 1924 it was $3,342). The Ground continued to make a contribution of $100 a month to the funds of the Tsan Yuk Hospital.

Passage Money Fund.

(Table XXIV).

The net income of the Fund was $278 and the total expenditure $430 as compared with $528 and $602 last year.

RENTS ORDINANCE.

The stimulus given by the various Rents Ordinances to new construction had by the Spring of 1925 produced something very near if not an actual surplus of housing accommodation. It was indeed strongly contended in some quarters that the Colony was already overbuilt. The landlords pressed for the complete withdrawal of the restrictions while tenants, not wishing to move into the new but less convenient housing areas, protested against any mitigation at all. The Government decided upon a compromise and by Ordinance 8 of 1925 permitted the landlord to increase the standard (not the actual) rent by 15% as from
