70. Maintenance of Buildings.-Government Buildings generally were kept in their usual good state of repair, a number of them being renovated in accordance with the recurring programme. Several of the buildings needed very extensive repairs owing to the ravages by white ants, the worst case being the Ma Tau Kok Slaughter House the roof of which was practically renewed.

The expenditure amounted to $40,546.13.

71. Improvements to Buildings.-The principal improvements carried out under this heading were as follows:-

Central British School.-Provision of new cupboard and shelving to Scales Room and installation of special 3-way taps at the Physics and Chemistry Rooms. Kowloon Fire Station.- Erection of Petrol and Oil Store. Kowloon Magistracy.- Alterations and improvements to Court Room. Old Police Station, Shamshuipo.-Its conversion into Quarters for the Wei Hai Wei Police. Kowloon Junior School, Gun Club Hill.- Erection of matshed to form enclosure for extra Class Room.

Numerous other improvements of a minor nature were carried out to various buildings.

The expenditure amounted to $6,782.95.

The following are particulars of the additional areas laid with improved surfacing during the year:-

73. Maintenance of Telephones.-The lines and instruments were maintained in good order. Twelve additional telephones were installed during the year. Cable Reserve signs and lights were erected in the Stonecutters area.

An electric alarm system was installed in No. 2 Section, Laichikok Prison.

74. Maintenance of Sewers, Nullahs, &c.-The sewers, stormwater drains, and trained nullahs were cleansed, repaired and maintained in good condition, the open channels and nullahs being cleansed by the Sanitary Department. The automatic flushing tanks were kept working continuously and sand deposits as they accumulated were removed.
