58. Maintenance of Public Recreation Grounds.—The various grounds were maintained in good order. The use of departmental labour for the purpose of mowing grass, cleansing ditches, etc., was continued.

59. Dredging Foreshores.—The No. 1 Grab Dredger was employed at the following places and removed the quantities of material stated hereunder during the year:

Drain outfalls Cubic Yards. 24,394 Sanitary and other Piers 6,023 Causeway Bay 855 Laichikok 219 On hire 89 Total 31,580

The above material was deposited on the sites of the Kowloon City, North Point, Kennedy Town and Shamshuipo Reclamations.

The Dredger was put on the slip and thoroughly overhauled and defective parts of the hull and machinery were made good at a cost of $2,888.50.

For the hire of the Dredger $78.20 was received.

60. Typhoon and Rainstorm Damages.—Small landslides occurred after the heavy rains in June and July at the following places—Belchers Street Coolie Quarters, Happy Valley and Ventris Road Quarters, Wanchai Road Houses, and Kennedy Town Slaughter-houses.

A short length of retaining wall collapsed at the North side of the Staff Quarters at Kennedy Town Hospital, and a wash-out occurred at the South end of the site for the Second Block of Quarters in Ventris Road which necessitated a small reinforced concrete wall being erected.

On two occasions heavy rains did damage to the following works in course of construction:

Queen's College Site, Caroline Hill; Tai Hang Development, Road Construction; Access Road to War Memorial Nursing Home, Stubbs Road; Road contouring hillside in Wongneichong and Tai Hang Valleys, 2nd Section.

Considerable damage was done to roads and Recreation Grounds in Wongneichong District owing to the collapse of a retaining wall on I.Ls. 1364, 1386 and 1338.
