REPORT ON ENGLISH PRIVATE SCHOOLS 1925.
Day Schools.--The total number of schools existing at the end of December stands at 36 as against 45 in 1924; the number of students enrolled is 1632 and the average attendance 1479; a notable decrease as compared with the figures 3457 and 2828 in 1924 respectively. During the year 9 new schools were registered and 18 schools were closed.
Of the existing schools 4 are girls' schools, and 1 is a kindergarten school for European children. The remainder are boys' schools of which 3 prepare students for the Hongkong Matriculation and the Senior and Junior Locals.
Night Schools--38 schools were registered, and 51 closed--mostly during the latter part of the year--and 86 were in existence on December 31st. Owing to special circumstances 10 have not been able to resume work since the Summer Vacation, and are waiting for the return of students. The total enrolment is 1651 (2213 in 1924) and the average attendance is 1261 (1646 in 1924).
The great majority of the night schools are conducted on the premises of Vernacular Day Schools where furniture and apparatus are provided. Removals are frequent and some of the schools have only a short existence.
