Ground Nuts produced a fair crop but owing to heavy rains a large proportion of the nuts was spoiled by a fungoid disease; experiments have shown that the land in the New Territories will produce a much heavier crop if closer planting is carried out and seed not obtained locally, is used.

The Smooth Cayenne Pineapple plants which were obtained from Honolulu continue to grow well and produce a heavy fruit of excellent quality; a large number of shoots for propagating purposes were distributed locally.

A large number of seeds of a superior Papaya were also distributed locally, the growing of this fruit is being taken up more readily than any other which the Department has tried to introduce, very probably because of the quick results obtained and the low cost of cultivation.

A row of Water Pine (Glyptostrobus heterophyllus) was planted as a wind-break round two sides of the garden which are not protected by a bamboo hedge.

Frost was reported in the Fan Ling district on December 25th and 26th, the crops of Pineapple, Papaya and Sweet Potato were badly damaged by the sudden drop in temperature on the dates mentioned.

Little Hongkong Nursery.-The whole of the nursery was occupied by young trees of Cinnamomum Camphora, which will be planted in the adjoining valley where the thick forest composed very largely of indigenous trees of low value, formerly stood.

Owing to the difficulty of obtaining baskets, which are imported from Canton district, the 7,000 young trees could not be lifted and basketed during December.

A small hill at the west end of the nursery was cut away and the soil dumped to form fresh nursery ground in addition to the area where the hill had formerly stood.

Kowloon Tsai Nurseries.-One year old trees of Cinnamomum Camphora were raised for use in completing the plantation at Tai Wo Po.

Many thousands of shade and flowering trees were raised from seed in readiness for use in Hongkong and Kowloon.

Taipo Forestry Reserve.-This large area of ground which contains many native trees, shrubs and flowers which are so seldom to be seen at their best owing to wanton destruction by thoughtless persons, was placed under this Department at the beginning of the year.
