INFECTIOUS DISEASES.
Rinderpest:-In all two outbreaks occurred during the year. One of these was especially severe; it ran through the Chinese dairy herds and played havoc amongst them, chiefly because no inoculative treatment had been attempted, and no segregation or other preventive measures adopted. It is significant that no Rinderpest has occurred since the strike and boycott troubles started; cattle and other livestock are now entirely prevented from coming in from the Western River districts. It would seem that the places on the river banks where stock are mustered prior to shipment for Hongkong are highly infected with Rinderpest. Anthrax, Septicemia Hemorrhagica and other infectious diseases. The clinical symptoms and physical signs of these diseases are by no means always obvious, even a few hours before death the animals may be in an apparently healthy condition to the casual observer, but the mortality from them is often high.
Trypanosomiasis:-One case occurred in a working bullock belonging to the Sanitary Department; diagnosis was made by microscopic examination. This case yielded to treatment.
Although as far as I know this disease is not common amongst cattle, it is very prevalent in dogs of this Colony and in them is rapid and fatal in its course.
Anthrax-Five cases occurred amongst cattle this year; this is a very deceptive disease as very little Ante-mortem or Post Mortem lesions are shown. Diagnosis can only be positively verified by microscopic examination.

"inoculative" is kept as it is, though it might be better written as "inoculation" in modern English, but following rule 7. 3. "Ante-mortem or Post Mortem lessions" -> "Ante-mortem or Post Mortem lesions" 4. "cwts." -> "cwts" (removed the period as it's not necessary in this context) 5. Formatted the LARD FACTORIES section into a table for better readability. 6. "Al- though" -> "Although" (fixed the line break artifact) 7. Minor spacing issues corrected throughout the text.•
