The following table shows the numbers of deaths ascribed to Beriberi during the last ten years and the percentage rate of these on the total deaths.
Year No. of deaths from Beriberi Percentage of total registered deaths 1916 520 4.92 1917 654 6.26 1918 804 6.09 1919 555 4.76 1920 361 4.90 1921 526 4.42 1922 829 5.69 1923 1270 8.17 1924 1502 9.65 1925 1744 11.63The weekly incidence of deaths from Beriberi during 1925 is specially interesting.
Towards the end of June there occurred the "Strike" with the result that the prices of food (except rice) rose generally.
On examination of the table of weekly deaths given below it will be seen that for the twenty-six weeks ended June 28th, 1925 there were registered 643 deaths from Beriberi making an average of 24.73 deaths each week.
During the ensuing twenty-six weeks ended December 27th, 1925 there were registered 1102 deaths from this disease giving a weekly average of 42.3.
The rise in the weekly deaths following the Strike in June suggests that many Chinese live continually on the verge of Beriberi and that the alteration of their diet in consequence of the rise of the price of fresh foods may have been the cause of the increased mortality from Beriberi during the latter half of the year.
The following table shows the numbers of deaths from Beriberi registered for each of the periods of seven days from that ended January 4th, 1920 to that ended January 3rd, 1926.
