Year Estimated population Number of convicts Percentage of population Daily average number of prisoners Percentage to population 1916 528,010 203 0.038 638 0.121 1917 535,100 209 0.038 600 0.112 1918 558,000 224 0.040 601 0.108 1919 598,100 259 0.043 756 0.126 1920 648,150 275 0.043 755 0.117 1921 665,350 231 0.035 764 0.115 1922 662,200 259 0.039 787 0.119 1923 681,800 294 0.043 861 0.126 1924 799,550 345 0.043 1,066 0.133 1925 874,420 394 0.045 1,116 0.128

Although the number of Receptions in 1925 showed a decrease of 1043 compared with 1924 the daily average in Prison shows an increase of 50. The reasons for this are (1) the increased number of prisoners sentenced to penal servitude (2) fewer fines paid.

8. There were 792 punishments awarded for breach of prison discipline as compared with 463 for the preceding year. Corporal punishment was inflicted in twenty two cases for prison offences.

9. Seventy (70) prisoners were whipped by order of Courts.

10. There was no escape, or attempt to escape.

11. There were 30 deaths (28 natural causes and 2 execution). Of the 28 natural causes, 6 were due to dysentery of which an outbreak occurred during the strike.
