WATER SUPPLY

Further improvements have been made, during the year, with regard to the water supply for fire fighting purposes, by the laying of larger mains to replace smaller ones in the Central and Eastern districts of Hong Kong and by extending pipe lines, with additional hydrants, in the Kowloon Peninsula.

The installation of a further 37 Pedestal Hydrants in Hong Kong and 23 in Kowloon to replace ball hydrants has effected a marked increase in fire fighting efficiency.

GENERAL

Staff. The Chief Officer, (the Hon. Mr. E. D. C. Wolfe) and Station Officer G. C. Moss proceeded on long leave on the 11th April and 5th March respectively. During their absence Mr. P. P. J. Wodehouse, Captain Superintendent of Police, was appointed Chief Officer of the Brigade, and Sergt. P. J. Condon, of the Police Dept., acting Station Officer.

As a result of 51 desertions, 6 resignations, 3 dismissals and 3 deaths, 63 members were struck off the strength during the year. 32 Recruits were trained and passed out of the Drill Class into the Brigade while 28 candidates were appointed to positions as Sub Officers, Telephone Clerks, Fitters, Ambulance Attendants, and Float staff.

Equipment. The undermentioned equipment was supplied to the Brigade during the year: —

1 "Merryweather" Petrol Motor Fire Engine (capacity 500 G.P.M.)

2 "Merryweather" Trailer Motor Pumps (capacity 150 G.P.M.)

1 "Bayley" 55 ft. Fire Escape.

1 35 ft. Hand-extension Ladder. 12 Chemical Extincteurs.

10,000 feet of Hose.

Three new upper extension Ladders, (to replace those that were accidentally broken in November 1923) were supplied for the Motor Turntable and fitted to same at the K.C. Rly. Workshops. Motor Turntable and fitted to same at the Kowloon Canton Railway Workshops.
