REPORT ON THE NEW TERRITORIES FOR THE YEAR 1925.

B.-SOUTHERN DISTRICT.

1.-STAFF.

I was in charge of the office throughout the year. Mr. Ts'oi Kam Tat, class VI A clerk and shroff, was transferred to the Public Works Department on April 25th on promotion and Mr. Yeung Yu K'ei was engaged to replace him. The latter, after working six months, absconded on October 10th, and Mr. Chow Kwong Ming, class VIB, was transferred from the Public Works Department to fill his post. The absconding shroff was subsequently arrested and sentenced on conviction for larceny to three months' hard labour. Mr. Ng Wah, shroff, was convicted of larceny of Government funds, and was dismissed on October 23rd, and Mr. Au-yeung Man was transferred from the Imports and Exports Department on November 6th to fill his post. Mr. Tang Ting Chan, class VIB shroff, resigned on December 1st, and Mr. Tang Chap Wong was engaged on December 21st to replace him.

During the year two clerks were borrowed temporarily from other departments. Mr. Lei Yuk To, class VIB clerk, attached to the Treasury, was employed as assistant to the correspondence clerk from April 5th to December 8th to index and arrange the office files; and Mr. Chow Tai Hei, class VIB shroff, was lent by the Treasury from December 5th to December 21st to take the place of Mr. Tang T'ing Chan.

2.-MAGISTRACY.

The District Officer sitting as Police Magistrate heard during the year 201 cases affecting 370 persons; 318 persons were convicted, 44 bound over, 52 discharged and 70 imprisoned. The following table gives a comparison with 1923 and 1924.
