4. Cost of Office.-As the Survey Office forms part of the Public Works Department and is accommodated in the same building, the charges for numerous items such as lighting, heating, electric fans, etc., cannot be stated. Omitting these items, the following is a statement of the cost:—

Salaries, $167,783.75 Conveyance Allowances, 9,440.41 Wages for Coolies, 11,543.25 Rent for coolies, 3,394.71 Land Survey Contingencies, 540.64 Transport & Travelling Expenses, 2,190.66 Survey of Colony, 5,342.49 Rent Allowances, 694.75 Incidental Expenses (General), 7,556.50 Total $208,487.16

5. Trigonometrical Work.--New stations have been erected at Tai Mo Shan and Tsing I and those at Kai Keung Leung and Tai Lam Chung have been rebuilt to replace those which had been destroyed. The stations at Turret Rock and Cheng Shui Tan have been repaired. Observations have been taken from these stations and the field work is almost completed.

A new station was erected at Mt. Senhouse, Lama Island, and several other minor stations which had been fixed by an officer in charge of a survey which is being carried out by the Military Authorities were permanently marked.

6. Topographical and Cadastral Surveys.-The following were some of the more important and extensive surveys carried out during the year:-

Approximate area in acres. A contour survey of the new road and land adjoining between Wongneichong Gap and Repulse Bay. 60 An area between Aberdeen and Little Hongkong was surveyed and plotted. 172 Various areas at Pokfulam for re-adjustment of the Dairy Farm Co's holdings were also surveyed and plotted. 245 An area at Lai Chi Kok was surveyed and contoured and the whole plotted to a scale of 50 ft. to an inch, At Ho Mun Tin a contour survey was made and plotted in connection with various building sites. 378 42
