Of the 361 bags of mails and parcels despatched by the Seattle, U.S.A. Office for Hongkong per the s.s. "President Grant" on the 6th August, 254 bags only were received and of these, 135 bags with their contents were found to have been badly damaged by fire and water. 47 of the damaged bags were for Hongkong and the remainder for other places.

The loss and damage was due to a fire which occurred on board the President Grant near Yokohama.

Twelve extra Pillar and Wall Boxes were erected in the Colony during the year, including three in the New Territory—at Un Long, Taipo Market and Taipo Kau. A courier service was also instituted in the Territory, a postman going out daily by train and bus and delivering ordinary correspondence and selling stamps at Un Long, and clearing the three above-mentioned letter boxes on his return journey.
