ling Public or to Railway servants during the year, but two Chinese were killed while trespassing on the Railway.

Staff.

24. Mr. Robert Baker, Engineer of Way and Works, was granted 7 months leave from 11th April, 1916, to 26th November, 1916, and during his absence Mr. A. S. MacKichan, Assistant Engineer, acted as Engineer of Way and Works, and from July 1st to September 15th during my absence through illness the responsibilities of the Management of the Railway were also assumed by Mr. A. S. MacKichan.

I have pleasure in placing on record my appreciation of the efficient manner in which he carried out the duties of these offices which involved exceptionally heavy work owing to the disorganisation of traffic due to the disturbances on the Chinese Section of the Railway already mentioned. It was certainly a very anxious time and Mr. MacKichan deserves the greatest credit.

25. Mr. C. D. Lambert, Locomotive Superintendent, was granted 9 months leave from 23rd April, 1916, and on 10th July, 1916, joined His Majesty's Forces.

Mr. Ingham Sutcliffe was appointed Assistant Locomotive Superintendent and arrived in the Colony on 28th February, 1916, and has acted as Locomotive Superintendent during the absence of Mr. C. D. Lambert.

20th April, 1917.

H. P. WINSLOW,

Manager.
