50. Maintenance of Roads and Bridges in City.

Approximate Improvements to Roads and Bridges in City. Mileage 60.—A new vote under the second heading of this paragraph was introduced in the Estimates for 1915. The work executed under the two headings is however so closely allied that no useful purpose would be served by treating these headings separately and they have therefore been combined in this Report.

The road surfaces were maintained generally in a satisfactory condition, the bituminous treatment of carriageways throughout the City being considerably extended with the satisfactory result of further appreciably diminishing erosion. The opening of a Government Quarry rendered it possible to obtain the requisite grades of stone required for producing mixtures of maximum density and advantage was taken of this to modify the methods of bituminous treatment hitherto in use by laying an artificial asphalte in certain roads which are subject to heavy traffic. The following are particulars of the improved surfacing introduced on a number of the roads :-

Substitution of Granite Setts for Macadam or Concrete :—

Connaught Road, continuation of length already laid near west end of Wing Lok Street, sq. yds. 152 Burd Street, sq. yds. 80 Queen Victoria Street, 280 Praya East, 78 Smithfield, 122 Yee Wo Street, 257 sq. yds., 969 66

Substitution of Tar Macadam for Ordinary Macadam :

Bonham Road, sq. yds. 1,318* Conduit Road, 1,926 Connaught Road Central, 208 Fuk Hing Lane, 263 Hatton Road, 331 Lower Albert Road, 123 Mosque Junction, 107 Peak Road, 340 Pokfulam Road, 60 Queen's Road East, 4,214 Smithfield, 486 Wanchai Road, 994 Wongneichong Road, 1,292 sq. yds., 11,662
