MERCANTILE MARINE OFFICE.
27,505 seamen were shipped and 26,577 discharged at the Mercantile Marine Office and on board ships during the year, compared with 26,833 shipped and 22,651 discharged during 1913.

352 distressed seamen were received and admitted to the Sailors' Home, etc.; of these 46 were sent Home, 62 to Calcutta, 5 to Colombo, 1 to Newcastle, 2 to Port Said, 4 to Shanghai, 8 to Singapore, 3 to Sydney, 1 to Vancouver, 37 passengers to Calcutta, 132 to Canton, 1 to London, 1 to Shanghai, 2 to Singapore, 1 refused to leave the Colony, 4 taken charge by Foreign Consuls, 4 joined H. M. Navy, 1 disappeared, 3 died in Government Civil Hospital, 9 remained in the Sailors' Home, 1 in Hospital and 24 obtained employment.
$4,630.45 was expended by the Harbour Master on behalf of the Board of Trade in the relief of these distressed seamen.

MARINE SURVEYOR'S OFFICE.
The total number of vessels surveyed for Passenger Certificate and Bottom Inspection in 1914 was 170 vessels of 414,392 gross tons, 85 being surveyed at Kowloon Docks, 57 at Taikoo Dockyard, 7 at Cosmopolitan, and 4 on Chinese slipways; the remainder being surveyed in the harbour on bottom certificates previously granted at Hongkong or Shanghai.
The nationalities and tonnage of these vessels were as follows:-
British, 104 vessels of 276,566 tons. German, 24 42,089 " Norwegian, 6 9,498 " French, 2 2,793 " Chinese, 7 13,863 "Emigration Surveys were held on 51 British and 63 Foreign Steamships, as compared with 50 British and 74 Foreign Steamships in the previous year.
