During the year I collected data regarding the prevalence of the opium habit among those admitted to Gaol. In all I took 1,030 admissions, out of which number 275 were admitted opium smokers, or shewed evidence of it. This gives a percentage of 26.70 for the period during which I made my observations, from July 25th to December 1st, 1911.

Of this total (275) the following were the causes of reduction of Gaol labours:

I.—Debility and poor physical condition, 55 cases 20.0% II.—Age, i.e., over 50, 39 14.0% with the opium habit, 5 1.82% III. Other causes not connected
