QUEEN'S COLLEGE, HONGKONG,

Mathematical Syllabus and Instructions.

General Instructions.

In Classes 8 to 3 inclusive, Mathematics on the lines of the Class syllabus is a compulsory subject. In Classes 2 and 1 there will be two sections in Mathematics, --the "Class Course" and the "Special Course".

1

The "Special Course" in Class 2 will be equivalent to the "Class Course" in Class 1; the "Special Course" in Class 1 will embrace work of a more advanced nature. In both “Special Courses” Trigonometry will be compulsory.

ARITHMETIC,

In any case where an algebraic method gives a shorter and neater result, such method must be used. Pupils should be made familiar with symbolic expression, and its application to formulæ in Mensuration, Physics, etc.

Great stress is laid on the use of Oral teaching, especially on beginning a fresh branch of the subject. In each Lesson at least five minutes should be devoted to Mental Arithmetic.

A.- In exercises concerning Weights and Measures, Vulgar Fractions, Decimal Fractions, Practice, Square Root and Proportion lengthy questions are to be avoided. B.-In Weights and Measures the Metric system is to be taught synchronously with the British Standards.

C.-Factors.

In cancelling operations a thorough knowledge of the application of the tests of divisibility by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12, is to be insisted upon.

D. In H. C. F.:-

(1) Any obvious factors should be removed from the number before applying the rule (see C).

(2) Arrange the work in parallel columns.

(3) Any factor of any remainder, if not a common factor to the numbers whose H. C. F we wish to find, is to be discarded.

E-(1) In work connected with decimals always use decimal methods and do not convert to Vulgar fractions. The reverse does not hold.

(2) In Multiplication and Division of decimals instead of the actual multiplier and divisor take the corresponding decimal of standard form.
