It is important that care be taken to obtain and record the true bearing and distance in feet of the centre of the pier from a fixed point in the proposed Observatory, such as the centre of the pier for the transit-instrument in that building.
I may also point out that it will be interesting hereafter to obtain, by means of a small triangulation across the harbour, the measured difference of latitude between Lieutenant Commander GREEN'S pier on the North Barrack Parade ground and my pier on Mount Elgin. Such measurement will afford a means of comparing the observed latitudes at the two places, as soon as his results have been made known; and the difference between the observed and measured differences should show the extent by which his observations have been affected by local attraction.
