ROYAL COLLEGE OF SURGEONS OF ENGLAND to COLONIAL OFFICE.

(Received July 30, 1904.)

[Answered by No. 135.]

Royal College of Surgeons of England, Lincoln's Inn Fields, SIR,

London, W.C., July 29, 1904. WITH reference to your letter of the 29th January (45148/1903)* regarding the institution of an examination and diploma in tropical medicine, I am desired by the President to inform you that the question has been considered by this College both independently and in association with the Royal College of Physicians, and that the two Colleges have arrived at an agreement as to the course which it appears most desirable for them to take at the present stage.

As regards the explanation of the resolutions adopted, the Colleges think that a brief interview with the Secretary of State would be more satisfactory than a written communication, and the two Presidents would be pleased to attend at the Colonial Office if the favour of an interview could be accorded.

I am to add that, should Thursday, the 4th proximo, be a convenient date, the two Presidents would be able to wait upon the Secretary of State at any time after 2 o'clock p.m. on that day.

I am, &c.,

S. FORREST COWELL,

Secretary.

SIR,

No. 132.

ROYAL COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS to COLONIAL OFFICE.

(Received July 30, 1904.)

[Answered by No. 135.]

Proposed Examination and Diplomas in Tropical Medicine.

Royal College of Physicians, London, S.W., July 30, 1904. ALLOW me to refer you to your letter of January 29th last (No. 45148/1903),* on the above subject, and more especially to my reply dated April 2nd, † from which point I beg leave to resume the correspondence on behalf of this College.

Since then the matter has remained under the consideration of the Royal Colleges separately and jointly, and has been the subject of a further reference to a Select Committee specially appointed by both.

As a result of their deliberations the Colleges have adopted certain resolutions as to the course which it is desirable for them to take in the matter at the present stage.

It is felt, however, by the Colleges that these resolutions require explanation, and that for this purpose a short interview with the Secretary of State would be much more satisfactory than a written communication, and the two Presidents would wil- lingly attend at the Colonial Office for this purpose if Mr. Secretary Lyttelton would kindly grant them an interview.

If Thursday next, August 4th, would be convenient to the Secretary of State, the two Presidents could wait upon him at any time after 2 o'clock p.m. on that day.

I am, &c.,

EDW. LIVEING (M.D.),

(Registrar.)

GOVERNOR SIR C. M. CLARKE to MR. LYTTELTON.

(Received August 1, 1904.)

[Answered by No. 154.]

The Palace, Valletta, July 27, 1904. WITH reference to your confidential despatch of the 14th instant, † I have the honour to enquire whether the proposal to pay an allowance of 15s. a day to Major Horrocks from the Mediterranean Fever Commission Fund, in addition to 10s. a day which he is receiving from the War Office, is concurred in by the latter Department.

2. Should there be no objection on the part of the War Office to this payment, I have none to offer.
