WITH reference to your despatch, No. 53, of the 6th of February* (of which a copy is enclosed for convenience of reference), I am directed by Mr. Secretary Lyttelton to transmit to you, for your consideration, the accompanying copy of a lettert from the Crown Agents, enclosing a letter from Messrs. V. and R. Blakemore, submitting samples of wire gauze of somewhat stronger material than that suggested by Lord Onslow's Committee.

2. I am to inform you that Mr. Lyttelton has no objection to your ordering a supply of whichever type you prefer, at a cost not exceeding £50, to be sold in Antigua, at prices sufficient to cover cost, freight, and insurance.

I AM directed by Mr. Secretary Lyttelton to acknowledge the receipt of letter of the 27th of May, ‡ and to transmit to you the accompanying copies of two your telegrams§ which have been sent to the Governor of Malta upon the subject of the proposed investigation of Mediterranean Fever.

2. With regard to the question of the employment of Major Horrocks, Royal Army Medical Corps, with the Commission, I am to enclose, for your information, the accompanying copy of correspondence with the War Office and the Governor of Gibraltar on the subject.

3. I am to add that all financial matters connected with the inquiry will be settled by agreement between the War Office, Admiralty, and this Office, acting on behalf of the Malta Government.

The Royal Society, Burlington House, London, W., June 3, 1904. On the part of the President and Council of the Royal Society I have to express their satisfaction that the arrangements for the conduct of the enquiry into the Malta Fever have been made so promptly and so satisfactorily as is shown in your letter of yesterday‡ (18826/1904), and its accompanying documents.

I am directed to report to you that an important branch of the enquiry will relate to the epidemiology of the disease, and that for the proper investigation of this subject it will be necessary to secure the services of an experienced observer, such as those in the Medical Department of the Local Government Board. I under- stand that this Board will not improbably be willing to lend one of its trained staff for this purpose on condition that remuneration for a temporary substitute to fill his situation during his absence be provided at the rate of £500 per annum. I have written to the Local Government Board that as the expenses of the investigation will be defrayed by the War Office, Admiralty, and Colonial Office, this remuneration will be guaranteed by these Departments, if the Board agrees to furnish the epidemiologist
