Downing Street, February 5, 1904.
I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch, No. 147, of the 14th of September last,* from which I have learnt with pleasure that you are confident that the Legislative Council of the Gambia will readily vote a contribution towards the common fund which it is proposed to establish for the purpose of supporting the various objects referred to in Mr. Chamberlain's circular despatch of the 28th of May last.†
2. With regard to the amount of the contribution, I would suggest that you should propose to the Council that a sum of one hundred pounds should be voted annually for a term of five years, at the expiration of which the matter could be again considered.
3. This sum exceeds the sum mentioned in the last paragraph of your despatch, but I think that the additional expenditure is justified by the importance of the objects to which it is to be devoted, and I trust that you and the Council will share my view.
