GENTLEMEN,

COLONIAL OFFICE to THE ROYAL SOCIETY.

[Answered by No. 108.]

Downing Street, April 19, 1905. WITH reference to previous correspondence respecting the Malta Fever Commis- sion, I am directed by Mr. Secretary Lyttelton to state that the extraordinary expen- diture for last year, exclusive of the grant made by the Royal Society, was about £1,000, and to enquire whether the Royal Society can give any idea of the probable duration of the enquiry and of the amount of the extraordinary expenditure for this

year.

2. The Governor of Malta has asked when Dr. Zammit is likely to be able to resume his duties. Mr. Lyttelton will be glad if information can be given on this point also.

I am, &c.,

THE ROYAL SOCIETY to COLONIAL OFFICE. (Received May 10, 1905.)

[Copy to Governor, June 8, 1905. No. 83. L.F.]

WITH reference to Mr. Cox's letter of the 19th ultimo (No. 8611/1905), I

Burlington House, London, W., May 9, 1905. am instructed to reply on behalf of the Royal Society that it is anticipated that the enquiry into Malta Fever will require at least another year. The probable expense for this year may be estimated at about £750 on the old footing. But if the scheme for the employment of sanitary inspectors should be adopted, which was urged in the letter from the Royal Society of the 13th April,§ an additional outlay of perhaps £2,000 would be needed.

With regard to the question asked by the Governor of Malta, it appears to be probable that Dr. Zammit will be able to resume his usual duties at the end of this summer.
