ROYAL SOCIETY to COLONIAL OFFICE.

[Answered by No. 36.]
Burlington House, London, W., August 24, 1905. At the last meeting of the Tropical Diseases Committee of the Royal Society a resolution was unanimously passed expressive of the thanks of the Society to Captain E. D. W. Greig, I,M.S., for his valuable services in the investigation of sleeping sickness, and for the excellent memoir recently submitted by him for publi- cation in the Society's series of reports. It would be very gratifying to the Committee if means could be found to procure from the Indian Government some promotion to Captain Greig in the service to which he belongs, as a recognition of the capacity, energy and enthusiasm which he has shown in the delicate and laborious work entrusted to him by the Royal Society. I have, therefore, ventured to bring this matter before the Colonial Office as the Government Department more specially concerned in the sleeping sickness enquiry.

TREASURY to COLONIAL OFFICE.
(Received August 26, 1905.)
C. P. LUCAS.
Treasury Chambers, August 25, 1905. THE Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury have carefully considered Mr. Lucas's letter of the 18th instant (29125/1905), with its enclosures, relative to the investigation of sleeping sickness in Uganda. They note that it now appears that similar investigations have already been instituted in Egypt; and they have no doubt that Mr. Secretary Lyttelton will arrange for the co-ordination of the two enquiries.
While recognising that a case exists for the grant of some allowance for super- vision to Dr. Moffat, their Lordships could hardly consent to its being fixed at so high a figure as £250 per annum, and they would suggest its reduction by £100 per annum, ie., to £150 per annum.
The financial position will then be as follows:-

ing the entomologist, otherwise provided for)—
