Obviously, lectures specially prepared for use in the Eastern Colonies contain many references and comparisons which would make them inappropriate elsewhere. I have therefore, at your request, carefully considered the question of adapting both lectures and slides to the needs of India and the other Colonies. As will be seen from the estimate in Appendix B, the cost of adaptation to any given Colony or group of Colonies may be taken at £100. This sum includes a payment on account of copyright to the three Eastern Crown Colonies. If we divide the Empire beyond the seas, exclusive of the three Eastern Crown Colonies, into eight divisions, and if the Egyptian Government were also to take advantage of the scheme, it will be seen that the expenditure of £230 hitherto incurred by each of the three Eastern Colonies might be written down to £140.
Each set of the adapted slides as of the original would cost £43 108. The nine groups in question, exclusive of the three Eastern Colonies, would be as follows:—
The Mediterranean Colonies.
Egypt.
The South African Colonies.
The West African Colonies.
The West Indies.
British North America.
India.
Australia.
New Zealand.
I should be willing to take charge in each case of the revision of the lectures and the selection of a certain proportion of new slides adapted to local requirements.
There remains the question of sales in the Home Country. I think that when the present edition is sold out, having as I hope still further appreciably reduced the initial cost to the three Colonies, it might be worth while before reprinting to detach the first lecture and thoroughly revise the remainder for home use.
March 30, 1905.
I am, Gentlemen,
Yours faithfully,
H. J. MACKINDER.
