PRESENT:

Sir R. Moor (Chairman).

Sir T. Barlow.

Sir P. Manson.

Surgeon-General A. Branfoot. Colonel D. Bruce. Mr. C. P. Lucas. Mr. T. Holderness.

Mr. H. J. Read.

1. The minutes of the last meeting were passed.

2. Mr. Lucas reported that he and Mr. Read had had an interview with Sir A. Rücker as arranged at the meeting of the 27th of March, and that in consequence a letter had been addressed on the 29th of April to the Royal Society,* to which the letter from that Society of the 22nd of Mayt was the reply. He also mentioned that Professor Ray Lankester had expressed himself unfavourably towards the scheme of the temporary endowment of a Professorship of Protozoology in a note to Mr. Lyttelton, and that it had been pointed out to him in reply that the project would in no way interfere with the proposal of a permanent endowment.

Mr. Lucas proposed that the Board should now write to the University of London offering the sum of £700 for five years. Some discussion ensued as to the exact terms of the offer. It was unanimously agreed that the Professor appointed ought not to be required to do routine teaching, but that he ought to deliver one or more courses of lectures on his work during each year. Colonel Bruce suggested that the exact nature of the lectures should be left to the Professor and the University, and it was finally decided that it should be left to Mr. Lucas to draft a letter to the University in which it would be stated that the Board presumed that the wishes of the Royal Society were not incompatible with the delivery of a short course of lectures on protozoology, dealing with his own work and the progress made in the subject during the year.

3 and 4. A question was raised in connection with these reports whether they shall be published so that the Colonial Governments shall be aware of the work done. Eventually, on the proposal of Mr. Read, it was decided that "at the be- ginning of each year a circular despatch be drafted summarising the reports received during the year and stating what had been done with the funds." draft would be submitted for the consideration of the Board before being despatched.

This

Sir R. Moor suggested that the Liverpool School should be asked to explain in detail what had been done with the grant from the Fund. Mr. Lucas expressed a desire to avoid giving trouble to the Schools on points of detail in the preparation of their reports, and after discussion it was decided to leave it to Mr. Lucas to draft letters to the two Schools suggesting that, for convenience of record and of communication to the Colonial Governments, the reports should deal in detail with the following subjects:--

1. List of publications issued.

2. Exact object on which grants had been applied.

3. Any definite progress made in the particular study.

4. A summary of the general work of the School.

5. The question was raised as to whether the sum of £200 mentioned was an annual grant, or a capital sum, and it was decided that Mr. Lucas and Mr. Read should discuss the matter with Mr. Andrew Clark and report to the Board.
