I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your Confidential despatch of the 26th ultimo, on the subject of the sinking of the steam-ship "St. Kilda," and to inform you that a copy, together with its enclosures, has been communicated to the Foreign Office.

I have also to inform you that a letter, dated the 28th instant,t has been received from that Department, in which it is suggested that you should be asked to endeavour to hasten the preparation of the claims of persons in the Colony who are interested in the "St. Kilda," in order that there may be no undue delay in forwarding them to His Majesty's Ambassador at St. Petersburgh.

WITH reference to the letters from this Department of the 19th and 27th June last, with regard to the steam-ship "St. Kilda," I am directed by Mr. Secretary Lyttelton to transmit to you, to be laid before the Marquess of Lansdowne, the accompanying copy of a despatch from the Governor of Hong Kong, enclosing en clair recorders of telegrams (copies of which have already been forwarded to the Foreign Office in the letters under reference), together with copy of a letter from the local agents of the vessel, intimating their intention to submit a claim in respect of her loss, for presentation to the Russian Government.

It will be observed that the copy of Sir M. Nathan's telegram of the 17th June as now received is not identical with the original message, but includes certain additional words.

I AM directed by Mr. Secretary Lyttelton to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 26th instant,§ indicating the nature of certain information with regard to the mails taken from the steam-ship "St. Kilda" by the Russian cruiser "Dnieper," with which the Marquess of Lansdowne desired to be furnished, and to state that a telegram in the sense suggested by his. Lordship was dispatched to the Governor of Hong Kong on the 27th instant.||
