I HAVE the honour to forward a letter, with enclosure, from the Resident-General, shewing the expenditure incurred and estimated for railway extensions in the Federated Malay States. The photographs and sketch map are also forwarded by this mail.

Resident-General's Office, Selangor, Malay Peninsula, March 2, 1899.
I HAVE the honour to enclose, for the information of Your Excellency and the Right Honourable the Secretary of State, a return shewing the expenditure incurred and estimated for the railway extensions now in progress. The return, as regards the future, is only approximate, but it has taken a great deal of trouble to prepare, and is a useful guide.
2. I forward also a map shewing the state of railway work in August last, together with some progress photographs* of the Perak River railway bridge.
I shall be obliged if Your Excellency will allow these enclosures to be forwarded to the Secretary of State.
