GENERAL INFORMATION AS TO VARIOUS BRITISH COLONIES.

The following information is compiled to answer general inquiries as to some of the British Colonies which are not, like North America, Australia, and South Africa, fields for emigra- tion in the ordinary sense, and which, on the other hand, do not form a distinct group like the West Indies. A schedule is alded showing in most cases the way to reach, the cost of reaching, and the time taken in reaching, each of the specified colonies.

Heligoland is a little island in the North Sea, with an area of three-quarters of a square mile, and a population of some 2,000, speaking a Frisian dialect, and mostly fishermen. The climate is healthy, but the island is much exposed to storm and wind, and is attractive only as a bathing resort in suinmer. reached from the German ports of Hamburg, Cuxhaven, or Bremerhaven, the whole journey from England taking about 30 hours.

In each case the climate is sub-tropical, and therefore much hotter than that of England. The climate of Cyprus in some parts is malarious and unhealthy.

Gibraltar is simply a military fortress, and the number of residents is limited.

Multa is densely populated; large numbers of Maltese have emigrated, and there is no room or opening whatever for anyone from the outside.

Cyprus is inhabited by a population partly of Greek, partly of Turkish origin. The island is not, at any rate at present, a field for agricultural settlement as understood in this country, and, owing to the difference of climate, language, and conditions, any emigration from Great Britain to Cyprus may be considered as out of the question,
