DEAR LADY KNUTSFORD,
Your letter announcing the contributions collected in many
of
the Colonies for the purpose of presenting to the Princess of Wales
and myself a gift in commemoration of our Silver Wedding has given us very sincere pleasure. Amongst the evidences of friendly regard which we have received, none has been more touching and gratifying than this mark of sympathy from the inhabitants of many widely distant places, whom the Princess and I have not been able
to have the advantage of meeting, and who can be but imperfectly
aware of the deep interest which we feel in the welfare of Her
Majesty's loyal subjects beyond the seas.
It is a specially pleasing feature of this very kind remembrance
of us, that, by fixing the contributions at very small amounts, persons
of every class and race have been enabled to participate in it.
We shall be much obliged if you will, in whatever manner
may seem best, convey to all those who have joined in this most
interesting gift, an expression of our warm thanks.
