SIR,

Enclosure 8.

(See paragraph 99 of Report.)

Apia, May 30, 1886. I HAVE the honour to inform you that I called yesterday personally upon Tamasese and his followers in Aana, and that he is willing to submit to our agreement, made with a view to prevent the outbreak of hostilities. The people of Manono and Faasaleleaga, having, in obedience to King Malietoa's orders, left yesterday their positions on the left side of Aana, Tamasese has now ordered his people to leave the forts on the east boundary to-day, so that nothing will prevent the Tuamasaga war party from withdrawing from their position to-morrow. If this effect of the agree- ment is carried out, the war parties at present in Aana will disperse, and return on Wednesday the 2nd of June to their respective homes, so as to have the status quo ante restored. You will oblige me by informing King Malietoa of this result of my negotiations, and I shall always feel happy to further co-operate with you for the purpose of maintaining the peace.

I have, &c., (Signed) DR. STUEBEL,

German Consul-General.

B. Greenebaum, Esq.,

United States Consul.
