Sets out in detail the present position, as far as Nyasaland is concerned, with regard to the various proposals mentioned in the letter from the Colonial Office forwarding the Report of the Interdepartmental Committee. Transmits copy of a letter from the Administrator enclosing a copy of a report by the Principal Medical Officer respecting the various ques- tions raised by the Colonial Office.

Encloses copies of correspondence with the Governor of Nyasaland, and of the report of a Committee appointed to consider the form of annual reports on the destruction of animals in tsetse-fly areas in Africa.

Transmits copies of correspondence with the British South Africa Com- pany on the subject of the recom- mendations of the Interdepartmental Committee, and trusts that his Gov. ernment and the Rhodesian Admin- istration will keep closely in touch with the matter.

Refers to No. 1; observes that Mr. Harcourt has no criticisms to offer on Dr. May's memorandum enclosed in No. 2, but would be glad to have some particulars as to the conditions allowing free game destruction in Southern or Northern Rhodesia, and the results obtained.

States that the suggestions for future work contained in Appendix D of the Sleeping Sickness Committee's Report are receiving the careful con- sideration of the Principal Medical Officer; gives purport of Dr. Hodges's report as to work already done; does not consider that any good purpose would be served by clearing areas of wild game until the fly-belts have been more accu- rately defined and more extended in- vestigation of the bionomics of the tsetse undertaken.

Observes that the statements in No. 6 do not appear to call for special comment, but that it would be inter- esting to learn the details of the clearing experiment referred to.

Transmits a copy of a minute by the Senior Sanitary Officer, together with a copy of a covering minute by the Principal Medical Officer respect- ing the recommendations of the Sleeping Sickness Committee; and states that he is strongly of opinion that the action of the Government with regard to clearing Sierra Leone should be limited to the measures laid down in the rules made under the Public Health (Protectorate) Ordinance.

except that the Director hopes to re- ceive in due course details of the experiment in clearing.

Awaits with interest further informa- tion as to the clearing experiment referred to in No. 6, and agrees that no action should be taken in respect of systematic game destruc- tion during the continuance of the War.
