6. 3.5. 'Josephina.”—The Committee approved the draft of a letter which Mr. Holt proposed to send to the Agent-General for British Columbia relative to the conveyance of timber by this ship.

7. 8.3. Gracia."-The Secretary read a letter from the Transport Depart- ment, and the Committee instructed him to ask that Department to examine this ship promptly and report as soon as possible whether she was specially suited for transport purposes.

8.8. Marina."--Mr. Holt reported that he had almost completed arrange- ments with Messrs. Elder Dempster and Company for the charter of this ship. He suggested that the stores on the ship should be taken over by Messrs. Elder Dempster and Company and not by the Government: the Committee agreed to this. It was understood that the arrangements would be discussed between Mr. Mitchell Cotts and this firm.

Yawry."-Mr. Holt reported that various difficulties had arisen, among them being the illness of the captain and the difficulty of obtaining a second mate. It was understood that a second mate could be obtained who had had previous experience but had not got a mate's certificate, and that this might lead to trouble in an Australian port. The Committee thought that the risk of this must be taken. 11. 8.8. "Syra."-The Secretary reported that this ship had been valued by Messrs. Kellock and Company at £16,134.
He also submitted to the Committee a copy of the accounts of the voyage from Gibraltar to Alexandria, the originals having been sent to the Attorney-General at Gibraltar. It was agreed that the latter's report on the subject might be awaited. The Committee noted that the amount of freight paid at Alexandria on the released cargo was about £300, and that Messrs. Tyzack and Branfoot would receive 11 per cent. commission on this sum.
" and "Apolda."-The Committee approved of a 12. Steamships “Humm further payment of £1,300 to the Federal Steam Navigation Company on account of their disbursements on these ships.
18. 3.8. "Erymanthos."-The agreement with Messrs. Elder Dempster and Company for the management of this ship was approved.

14. 8.0. 'Clevedon."-The Committee approved of £1,250 being paid to Messrs. J. Hardie and Company in respect of their disbursements on this ship.
15. s.s. "Macedonia.”—The Secretary reported that this ship had been valued by Messrs. Kellock and Company at £50,000. The Committee approved of Messrs. Kellock's bill for the valuation being paid.

8.5. "Gibraltar."—The Committee approved of the answer which it was proposed to send to the High Commissioner for Canada with regard to a complaint forwarded from the Rideau Bag Company of Montreal as to the amount which they had been required to pay for the conveyance of their cargo from Boston onwards.
17. 8.8. "Istria."-The Secretary read a letter from Messrs. Waltons and Company relative to the policies of insurance which the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation were required to take out under Clause VII. of the agree ment. The Committee agreed that the policies might be accepted, provided that the bank would give an undertaking that, if the discharge of the cargo took longer than thirty days after arrival in the United Kingdom, the ship would be covered by insurance.

THE FIFTY-NINTH MEETING of the Committee was held at the Colonial Office on Thursday, 17th June, 1915, to 3.15 p.m.

The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed.

2. 5.5. Concadoro."-Mr. Holt reported that the ship arrived at Gravesend
on the 17th, and that it was hoped that she would be docked that afternoon.
The Committee decided that Messrs. Lachlan and Company should be asked to suggest a figure for the reserve price at the auction.
Mr. Malkin reported to the Committee the position as regards the application which had been made to the Privy Council for a stay of execution. The Secretary was asked to write to Messrs. H. Clarkson and Company and warn them that there was a possibility that the sale might have to be postponed.
It was agreed that when the sale took place the mortgage deed to be entered into by the purchaser taking advantage of the condition allowing him to postpone the. payment of the balance of the purchase money should be left in the custody of the Assistant Paymaster-General.

Mr. Holt informed the Committee of various difficulties which had been met with in connexion with the s.8. "Paros."
4. 8.5.
Lutzow."-Mr. Holt reported that he had been informed by Messrs. Harris and Dixon that the ship was on her way to England, calling at Malta on the way. The Secretary was instructed to write to the Transport Department, and ask what was being done with the ship and how it was proposed to employ her after her arrival in the United Kingdom.
5. 3.5. "Marina."--The Committee approved the arrangements* which had been entered into with Messrs. Elder Dempster and Company for chartering this ship and for settling the claims of Messrs. Mitchell, Cotts and Company. It was understood that the charter would be for six months only. The Committee recommended that a telegram should be sent to the Governor-General of Nigeria to inform him of the arrangement which had been made, and to ask that the repairs which were required might be effected under the supervision of the Government.

s.v. "Chile."--The Committee decided not to accept a proposal from Messrs. T. A. Shute to collect a proportion of the freight in advance, at the cost of 2 per It was considered cent. commission, and the rate for marine and war insurances. preferable to adopt the alternative of putting the firm in funds to meet their cur- rent disbursements.
The Committee approved of a payment of £13 6s to Messrs. Kellock and Com- pany for preparing an inventory of this ship.
7. 8.5. "Istria."— Mr. Holt reported that this ship would arrive at her port of destination in four or five days. The Secretary was instructed to write to the Trans- port Department to ask whether it was desired to take over the ship, and, if so, for what purpose.
It was agreed that an application from the Well Line (Messrs. Tyzack and Bran- foot) for the use of this ship could not be accepted.
8. $.8. Bangor."-Arrangements for removing this ship from the Falkland Islands were discussed, and it was suggested that she might possibly be sent to West
