(c) LEAVE ANd Passage.
Leave of absence with full salary, exclusive of the period o voyages, is granted in normal circumstances at the rate of th days in respect of each month of resident service as a senior officer (ie., an officer having completed ten years' service) and four days in respect of each month of resident service as a junior officer (i.e., an officer not having completed ten years' service) as follows:-
(i) during his first ten years' service an officer may b granted vacation leave after he has completed a tour of 36 months' resident service, and he is not ordinarily called upon to serve a tour exceeding 48 months;
(ii) during his second ten years' service, an officer may be granted vacation leave after he has completed a tour of 24 months' resident service, and he is ordinarily called upon to serve a tour of not less than 30 months and not more than 36 months;
(iii) after 20 years' service, an officer may be granted vacation leave after he has completed a tour of 24 months resident service, and is not ordinarily called upon to serve tour exceeding 30 months.
The Regulations provide in addition for extensions of leave, i required on medical grounds, for a maximum period of six months with full salary, and if the officer is likely ultimately to become fit for further service for an additional period of six months with half salary. There is also provision for study leav in approved cases.
An officer proceeding on leave will normally be granted passages as follows:-
Free return passages, or single passages if the officer is retiring, by a route approved as a normal route will be pro- vided by the Government, once in respect of each tour, for an officer, his wife, and his children under the age of ten years; provided that the Government reserves the right to withhold the grant of passages to a wife or a child who do not accompany the officer or who does not precede or follow him within a reasonable time. An officer whose salary does not exceed $540 a month may be granted passages for sons under the age of 16 years and for unmarried dependent daughters.

(d) PENSION.
The present rule as to superannuation is that in the case of -health an officer holding pensionable appointment may be allowed to retire on a pension after ten full years' service; other- wise he must have attained the age of 55, though with the consent of Government he may retire at the age of 50. For ten full years' service 180/720ths (i.e., one-fourth) of the average annual salary the retiring officer's fixed appointments for three years prior to retirement may be awarded, to which 1/720th may be added for each additional month's service; but no addition will be made in respect of any service beyond 35 years. For pension purposes absence on full-pay leave counts as full service, and leave on halt-pay as half service.
An officer may, within one month after he first attains pension- able status, or in certain circumstances at the discretion of the Government within one month of his subsequent marriage, elect to be paid, on retirement, in lieu of the pension for which he would otherwise be eligible, a pension at the rate of three-fourths of such pension, together with a gratuity equal to ten times the annual value of the reduction so made in the pension.
An officer retiring before the completion of ten years' service, who would otherwise be qualified for a pension, may be granted gratuity at the rate of one-twelfth of a month's salary for each complete calendar month of pensionable service.
When an officer holding a pensionable office, who is not serv- ing on probation or agreement, dies while in the Service his legal personal representative may be granted a gratuity of an amount not exceeding one year's pensionable emoluments.
A deduction of 4 per cent. is made from the salaries of all officers confirmed in the permanent establishment as a contri- bution towards the provision of pensions for the widows and orphans of Government officers.
Women as Members of the Malayan Education Service.
6. There is a demand for women teachers recruited from
Europe with good educational qualifications, such as the degree of a British University or its equivalent or a Froebel certificate. The salary of a woman teacher is three hundred dollars a month, rising by twenty-five dollars annually to five hundred dollars a month (£420-£35-£700 per annum). Partly-furnished quarters are provided free of rent except for a small charge made for the furniture. The terms of engagement cited above apply also to women teachers, but no deduction is made from their salaries towards the Government Widows' and Orphans' Pen- sion Scheme. They may retire at the age of 45 and must retire not later than the age of 55.
