Memorandum for the Colonial Nursing Association as to the method of recommending Nurses for appointments in the Colonies.

1

On the occurrence of a vacancy for a matron or nurse in the Government service of a Colony for which it is desired that the Colonial Nursing Association should recommend a candidate, the Private Secretary will forward to the Hoa. Secretary of the Colonial Nursing Association particulars of the post in question. The Committee are requested to recommend only one candidate for each vacancy, and to make all such enquiries with respect to her personal character and professional qualifications as are invariably made by the Private Secretary with respect to all candidates for Colonial employment. For this purpose the Colonial Nursing Association are provided with a supply of the forms of application (A) and reference (B) which are ordinarily used.

A candidate recommended by the Committee must fill up the form of application A, and the two referees named by her must be required to fill

up the form B. When

the Secretary of the Colonial Nursing Association informs the Private Secretary of the name of the candidate recommended by the Committee for a particular vacancy, she should enclose both the form of application (A), filled up by the candidate herself, and the two statements (B) signed by her referees. Copies of any testimonials submitted by the candidate, duly certified by the Communittee or the Hon. Secretary, should also be sent.

If these forms are duly sent for examination and record in the Colonial Office, it will not be necessary for the Private Secretary to see the candidate recommended, or to make any further enquiries as to her fitness for the post.

Selected candidates will, of course, be obliged to pass the usual medical examination. The necessary authority for them to present themselves to the Medical Adviser to the Colonial Office for this purpose will be sent to them direct from the Colonial Office. If a selected candidate is required to come specially to London for medical examination, the necessary travelling expenses (third-class railway fares) will be paid by the Government.
