As it is stated that these stores had not been received, we encloše duplicate bill of lading* showing the shipment.
(3) 1191/1462-Militia Uniforms:-
The Colonial Government instructed us to give this order to a contractor whom we do not employ. He promised delivery on the 18th April, but was late, and ship- ment was not made till 19th June.
(4) 1964/2412-Date stamp types:-
We wrote to explain that the indent could not be complied with unless the numbering machine for which the types were wanted were sent to us.
The Acting Colonial Secretary, in a letter of the 18th June, 1901, replied: "I have the honour to inform you that it has been found possible to repair locally the numbering machine referred to, and to express my thanks for the trouble you have been so good as to take in the matter."

This seems to be another instance of the receipt of goods being overlooked. (6) 2048/2721-Books for Chemist:-
Several books were ordered and those which were in existence were sent at once. One was coming out in parts, and we sent the parts which were then out and have since been sending the further parts as issued.
This was explained to the Colonial Government.

The contractor explained that the delay was due to a difficulty in getting the
metal badges.

The glass was to be badged and a drawing had to be made and settled. A ques- tion arose as to certain leather binding required, and on the advice of Mr. Eyre Hutson, whom the Colonial Government had told us to consult, we referred it to the Colony.

Suppliers state that there were difficulties at the time in obtaining raw material.
A particular brand of iron was specified and makers were out of stock of it.

Letters sent to Colonial Government enclosing correspondence and cata- logues, and stating objection to use of iron for horticultural buildings and that we could not supply as required.--23rd March, 1901.

STEAM DREDGER FOR SINGAPORE RIVER.
This indent was received here on the 19th September, 1898, and was referred to the Consulting Engineers on the 21st of that month. They did not submit their re- commendations till 4th February, 1899, alleging the large amount of work entailed by the special features of this dredger as the cause of the delay. Tenders were issued from this office on the 11th February, 1899, and made due on the 1st March, but this date was afterwards extended to the 8th March at the request of the contractors. The Engineers' recommendation on the tenders were received on the 18th March, the result was cabled to the Colony on that date, and a reply was received on the 21st. The order was placed the same day with Messrs. Fleming and Ferguson, Limited,
