I AM directed by Mr. Secretary Chamberlain to inform you that after consulta- tion with the Royal Society, he has approved of the investigations with regard to malarial fever which have been carried out by the Malarial Commission in Africa being continued in India by Dr. Stephens and yourself.
2. It is anticipated that these further investigations will last for one year, and you will receive during this period, or such shorter period as the work may be actually found to occupy, salary at the rate of £400 a year, and a subsistence allowance at the rate of £120 a year.
3. The Crown Agents for the Colonies have been instructed to provide a passage to Calcutta for you, first class, by the P. & O. steamer leaving this country on the
