I AM directed by Mr. Secretary Chamberlain to request you, with reference to the letter from this Department of the 9th of November last, to transfer to the Fund for the payment of the expenses of the School of Tropical Medicine and the Commission appointed for the investigation of malarial fever the sums of £1,000 from Gold Coast funçls, £1,000 from Lagos funds, and £350 from Trinidad funds.
A further sum of £350 should be paid over next year from Trinidad funds, making a total contribution from that colony of £700,

Downing Street, London, April 11, 1899. - WITH reference to your letter No. 25029 of the 9th of November, 1898,* and to subsequent correspondence. I have the honour to enclose in original, for return, letterst which we have received from the Governments of the Straits Settlements and Sierra Leone stating that the sums of $5,000) and £150 (part of a contribution of £300) have been respectively voted towards the expense of the Malarial Fever Commission and the School of Tropical Medicine.
2. We propose, with the approval of the Secretary of State, to place these sums to the credit of the above funds.

I HAVE the honour to transinit herewith a copy of a resolution passed at the Annual Session of the Combined Court authorizing the expenditure of a sum not exceeding $2,400 as a contribution to the School of Tropical Medicine.
2. In view of the present condition of the finances of the Colony I regret that I did not feel justified in approaching the Court with a view of increasing this vote, as suggested in the fourth paragraph of your despatch, No. 343, of the 25th of November
last.

I HAVE the honour to inform Your Lordship that Doctors Stephens and Chris- tophers, two of the members of the Malaria Commission, reached this Protectorate about a fortnight ago.
As was arranged in England before my return here, Doctor Stephens and Doctor Christophers are making, for the present, their headquarters at Blantyre.
Doctor Daniels, the third member of the Commission, is expected to arrive from India in about six weeks' time.
In the matter of the payment of salary, &c., I am carrying out the financial in- structions laid down in Your Lordship's despatches, Nos. 171 and 172 of the 2nd and 7th December, 1898.

Be it Resolved, That this Court sanctions the expenditure of a sum not exceeding $2,400 as the contribution of this Colony towards the expenses of establishment in England of a School of Tropical Medicine, and of a Committee of Enquiry into Malaria.
