SIR,

No. 119.

NEWFOUNDLAND.

MR. CHAMBERLAIN to MR. A. W. HARVEY.

Downing Street, July 28, 1900, I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 19th instant,* forwarding a draft for £1,021 14s., representing the balance of the moneys collected by the Committee of the Patriotic Fund of Newfoundland for the benefit of the widows and orphans of those who have fallen or may fall in South Africa, together with copies of the Committee's Report and of the account rendered by yon as Honorary Treasurer,

2. I have had much pleasure in handing over the amount to His Royal Highness the President of the Commission of the Royal Patriotic Fund to be expended in the same manner as the sums previously received from Newfoundland,

3. Taking into account this remittance and the contribution generously voted by the Colonial Legislature, the sums which I have had the satisfaction of handing over, où behalf of the Colony to His Royal Highness amount to over £8,000.

4. I informed the Officer Administering the Government in May last that from no part of Her Majesty's dominions has there come relatively a more generous response to the patriotic call for help for those who have suffered in the maintenance of the rights and interests of the Empire, and I desire to take this opportunity of expressing my warm thanks to yourself and the other members of the Committee for their labours in the matter, and my cordial congratulations on the gratifying result which has been achieved.

I have, &c.,

J. CHAMBERLAIN.
