I AM directed by Mr. Secretary Chamberlain to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 6th inst., respecting the establishment of a School of Tropical Medicine in London, and to acquaint you in reply, for the information of the Marquess of Salisbury, that the Managing Committee of the Seamen's Hospital should be informed that the total grant which will be made on behalf of all the colonies and protectorates under the control of the Foreign Office or Colonial Office is, as the Committee are aware from a letter from this Office dated the 30th of June last,‡ £3,550, of which £1,775 will be paid by the Imperial Government through the Colonial Office on behalf of all Ex- chequer-aided colonies and protectorates, and the other moiety, also through the Colonial Office, on account of the other colonies and protectorates.

I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your telegrams of the 31st January, and the 3rd, 9th, 15th, and 23rd February, stating that the Legislative Council of the Straits Settlements have assented to the proposed grant of $5,000 to wards the cost of the contemplated School of Tropical Medicine and the Commission appointed to study the subject of malarial fever, and that the Federated Malay States have agreed to make an equal contribution.

2. You will have received my telegram of the 4th instant, expressing my thanks to the Legislative Council, the Federated Malay States and yourself for this generous contribution. I appreciate the liberal response which has been given to my invitation to the Colony and the Native States to assist in the realisation of a project which it is hoped will result in raising the standard of health in the tropical colonies and protec-

I AM directed by Mr. Secretary Chamberlain to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 11th inst.,§ relative to the proposed School of Tropical Diseases at Liver- pool, and to inform you in reply that in the first instance, at any rate, it is proposed that all doctors appointed to the Colonial Service should, before taking up their appoint ments, be attached to the Albert Docks Hospital for at least two months. It is con- sidered necessary to insist upon this condition until the proposed system is in full working order, and has had fair trial. Whether, in the light of further experience, the condition can with advantage be modified may be considered hereafter.
