SIR,

Bermuda, December 20, 1899. THE people of these islands being anxious to shew practically their sympathy with the mother country in connection with the present troubles in South Africa, the editors of the two principal local newspapers, viz., the “Gazette " and the “Colonist,” set on foot collections for the benefit of the wives and families of our soldiers and sailors in South Africa, whether on or off the strength, and I consented to cause the sums so collected to be remitted to England as the Bermuda contribution for that object.

2. I have accordingly caused to be transmitted by this mail to the Crown Agents for the Colonies the sum of £300 as the first instalment, and I should be glad if you would give instructions to them to cause this amount to be handed over to the Soldiers and Sailors' Families' Association, or such other association as you may consider best calculated to carry out the wishes of the subscribers as above expressed.
