Referring to your telegram 21st December,* Her Majesty's Government very grateful for offer of nurses from people of Western Australia which they gladly accept to attend to irregular troops and Colonial forces. British regular forces can be legally only attended by nurses belonging to Army Nursing Reserve.

Referring to your telegram of 16th December, † following composition for contin- gent proposed by my Government: Mounted Rifles, three squadrons, carefully selected for shooting and riding, and a fourth squadron of scouts, specially selected, from North- Western territories; strength of squadrons, 160; also Field Artillery, three batteries, 1,230 (approximately) all ranks, 18 guns, 1,124 horses. Please inform me whether you approve this composition; if so, it will be proceeded with at once.

I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch of the 22nd of November, in which you transmit a copy of a note from the Inspector-General of Police and Commandant of the local forces in Trinidad, reporting that ten officers and eighty- five non-commissioned officers and men have volunteered for active service in South Africa.

2. I caused a copy of your despatch to be transmitted to, the Marquess of Lans- downe, and have now to enclose a copy of the answer which has been received from His Lordship, expressing warm appreciation of the spirit which has dictated the offer of the Trinidad Volunteers, but regretting that it is not possible to comply with their desire for active service.

3. I wish to express my cordial concurrence in the terms of this letter.

I AM directed by the Secretary of State for War to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of 13th instant, transmitting a copy of a despatch from the Governor of Trinidad, reporting the offer of their services in South Africa, of a number of officers, non-commissioned officers, and men of the local forces of that Ísland.

In reply I am to request that you will be good enough to lay before Mr. Secretary Chamberlain this expression of Lord Lansdowne's gratification at this patriotic offer, his hearty appreciation of the spirit which prompted it, and his regret that he is not able to meet the wishes expressed by these Volunteers, with the request that Mr. Secretary Chamberlain may give instructions that Lord Lansdowne's sentiments may be conveyed to the Governor of Trinidad.

Your telegram of 21st December,* Her Majesty's Government very highly appre ciate offer from your Ministers of further military assistance, which they have great pleasure in accepting. They would, however, suggest for consideration of your Govern- ment whether substitution of more mounted troops of the same class as the North- Western Mounted Police for part of contingent of artillery proposed would not be improvement in composition of force in view of special requirements of the moment.
